What Hillel Means to Me

By Jordan Perlman, KSU '28

I’ve never felt at home somewhere so fast.

Growing up, I was always one of just a few Jewish kids in my class. It felt weird to be different, but I got used to it quickly. By the time I graduated high school and showed up at KSU, I just wasn’t expecting to have a Jewish community that I could relate to. Then, I heard about Hillel. The second I walked into the clubhouse, I felt like I was part of a family. Everyone was so welcoming and kind. Going to college and moving away from everything I'd ever known was terrifying, so being able to walk into Hillel and feel comfortable was so special.

I have only been in college for a few short months, but what I have experienced so far has been amazing. Hillel has provided me with opportunities, friendships, learning experiences, chances to socialize, and a place where I can be myself.

Even though I grew up going to Hebrew School on Sundays, I feel like there is still so much I have to learn about being Jewish. Judaism is a journey, and I think I took a big step in that journey by deciding to be a part of Hillel. It’s a more mature environment where I can explore topics I’m already familiar with in greater depth. I learn more about myself and my religion with every Hillel event I attend.

I know Hillel at KSU will continue to be a safe space for me and countless others. I look forward to growing in my religion as well as in my relationships and my confidence.

My experience with Hillel just goes to show that college is about so much more than just the classes. The relationships we create and the lessons we learn outside the classroom can be just as important as the content we learn in our lectures. Hillel is a wonderful organization, and I look forward to being a part of it throughout my college experience.
